More Good Reasons to Recycle

Economic Benefits of Recycling
Several studies have shown that recycling related businesses have substantial economic development benefits.
A study of 10 states in the Northeast region found that more than 100,000 people are employed in firms that process recyclables or use them in manufacturing. The study also estimates that more than $7.2 billion in value is added to recyclables in the Northeast through processing and manufacturing.

A similar study of 13 states and territories in the Southeast found that nearly 140,000 people are employed by firms that process recyclables or use them in manufacturing. The value added to recyclables for that region was estimated at $18.5 billion.

North Carolina found in a 1995 study that businesses which collect, process and manufacture recyclables have nearly $1 billion in total estimated sales and 9,000 employees - that's in North Carolina alone.

Environmental Benefits of Recycling
Recycling saves energy, natural resources, and landfill space. In most cases, making products from recycled materials also creates less air pollution and water pollution than making products from virgin materials.

"Buy Recycled" Myths
Here are four common myths and misconceptions about buying recycled:

Recycled products are hard to find.

This used to be true, but no longer. From the neighborhood grocery store to national retailers, stores sell thousands of products made from or packaged in recycled content material.

Recycled paper isn't as good as non recycled paper.

Recycled content papers now share the same printing and performance characteristics as their virgin equivalent. Recycled papers no longer look different. You can now find recycled content papers with the same whiteness and brightness as virgin papers. They also offer the same level of runnability and high quality imaging on copiers, and laser and ink jet printers.

Recycled products cost more.

This used to be the case for some materials, but things have changed. Many recycled products are priced competitively with their non recycled counterparts. In fact, some may be less expensive!
Recycled products are inferior in quality.

This is simply not true. Recycled products have the same quality, reliability, and dependability. A 1996 survey by the Buy Recycled Business Alliance asked hundreds of corporate purchasing agents about their satisfaction with recycled content products. The survey results showed that 97% of respondents were pleased with the performance of recycled content products.

Cascades receives award for its 100% recycled and recyclable ream wrapper

Monday, November 02, 2009

Press release from the issuing company

Saint-Jérôme, Québec - Cascades was rewarded by Eco Entreprises Québec by becoming an award winner of the Greener Containers, Packaging and Printed Matter Recognition Program, for its 100% recycled and recyclable ream wrapper. This new packaging was developed to replace the traditional packaging made with virgin fibres and covered by a plastic film.

The global integration of the project, combined with its consistency with the environmentally sound virtues of the product and the efforts in research and development have enabled Cascades to receive this award. Because of the joint work between production and research and development teams, Cascades is now able to manufacture a paper packaging that is 100% recycled. A water soluble additive included to protect the product from humidity now renders the packaging as recyclable as the paper it protects. Other components of the packaging were also modified, such as the quantity of ink and materials used.

Several environmental gains have been made because of this innovation. The packaging, composed totally of post-industrial recycled fibres, results in fewer new trees being cut down. Its production also requires less water and energy. Moreover, the recycled fibres are bleached thanks to a chlorine-free process and the paper is converted locally using biogas energy.

This approach allows an even greater use of the potential of the Rolland mill, since it enables the use of its own materials to package its products. It is also a concrete example of sustainable development that links environmental and economic gains to the securement of quality jobs.

Recycling Saves Energy Conserving energy remains an important issue in USA PDF Print E-mail

Recycling Saves Energy
Conserving energy remains an important issue in USA, especially with increased demand and unpredictable energy markets.  Energy savings through recycling are an important environmental benefit.  It almost always takes less energy to make a new product from recycled materials than it does to make it from new materials.

For example, when making cans, using recycled aluminum requires 96% less energy than manufacturing new aluminum from its virgin material, bauxite. Other commonly recycled items have a strong energy reduction when compared with the energy intensity used to extract their virgin materials. Recycling plastic bottles uses 76% less energy, paper uses 45% less, and glass uses 21% less.

Vehicle and household batteries contain toxic heavy metals PDF Print E-mail

Batteries

Vehicle and household batteries contain toxic heavy metals and acids that can cause serious environmental problems when they are disposed of with regular garbage. Look for solar powered products, or use an AC/DC adapter to avoid the use of batteries.

When you do need batteries, rechargeable Nickel-Cadmium batteries can be used many times and will save you money. Rechargeable and most batteries can be recycled at most Recycling Centers.
